  • Here are the latest developments in the coronavirus crisis: More than 2,571,881 infections have now been reported and at least 177,822 people have died worldwide, according to an AFP tally at 1100 GMT Wednesday based on official sources. Nearly two-thirds of those deaths have been in Europe, which has more than 110,522 fatalities. The United States has the most deaths of any country with 45,075. Italy is the second hardest-hit country, with 24,648 dead. Spain follows with 21,717, then France with 20,796 and Britain with 17,337. President Donald Trump confirms he will sign an order partially blocking immigration to the US, in a move he argues will protect workers from the economic fallout of the pandemic. He says he will stop the issuing of green cards -- permanent residency permits -- for 60 days, but will exempt temporary workers such as seasonal farm labourers. "The COVID-19 crisis is having a devastating effect on workers and employers," the International Labour Organization says, with "massive losses, both of output and jobs across all sectors." It says tourism and car manufacturing are particularly hard-hit. Latin America is set for its worst ever recession with a fall in GDP of 5.3 percent in 2020, the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL) says. The director of the US Centers for Disease Control warns Americans to prepare for a more ferocious second wave. "There's a possibility that the assault of the virus on our nation next winter will actually be even more difficult than the one we just went through," Robert Redfield tells the Washington Post. South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa unveils a $26 billion relief package aimed at stimulating the economy and cushioning the vulnerable people during the pandemic. Trump orders his administration to come up with a plan to aid US oil companies struggling with a massive supply glut and record-low crude prices. The US Senate approves a new $480 billion pandemic relief package, with funding earmarked for devastated small businesses, overwhelmed hospitals, and a ramp-up of testing nationwide. Germany green-lights the launch of a clinical trial on human volunteers for a vaccine against COVID-19, the country's regulatory body PEI says in a statement. The clinical trial will involve 200 healthy volunteers aged between 18 and 55 years vaccinated with variants of the RNA vaccine, developed by German firm Biontech and US giant Pfizer. burs-jba-eab/
