  • Here are the latest developments in the coronavirus crisis: The World Health Organization says that it is still possible to bring coronavirus outbreaks under control, even though case numbers have more than doubled in the past six weeks. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says the examples of Italy, Spain, South Korea and India's biggest slum showed that however bad an outbreak was, the virus could still be reined in through aggressive action. An epidemiologist and an animal health specialist from the WHO were flying to China to try and identify the animal source of the pandemic. The WHO says the advance team will be in Beijing for the weekend and will lay the ground for a wider mission aimed at identifying how the virus first infected humans. US President Donald Trump lashes out at China over the pandemic while visiting one of the worst-hit US states, Florida -- ignoring health advice about the dangers of large gatherings. "(The) relationship with China has been severely damaged. They could have stopped the plague... They didn't stop it," he tells reporters of the country where the coronavirus first emerged late last year. Trump's planned campaign rally in New Hampshire on Saturday is postponed because of an approaching storm, the White House announces. Trump's last campaign rally, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, last month drew criticism for ignoring coronavirus health guidelines and attendance was less than a third of capacity. The pandemic has killed 556,140 people worldwide since it surfaced in China late last year, according to an AFP tally at 1900 GMT on Friday based on official sources. The United States is the hardest-hit country with 133,542 deaths. It is followed by Brazil with 69,184, Britain with 44,650, Italy with 34,938 and Mexico with 33,526 fatalities. France's death toll exceeds 30,000, at a time health officials are warning of a rising trend in cases in metropolitan France and urging vigilance given the possibility of a second wave of the epidemic in the world's sixth worst-hit country. Colombia's capital Bogota will raise its health alert level and impose a "strict quarantine," in response to an increase in the rate of infection following the relaxation of lockdown measures, the city's mayor says. The South American country's coronavirus epicentre, of eight million people, has recorded 42,000 coronavirus cases, amounting to 32 percent of Colombia's 134,000 infections, and 950 deaths. European Union chief Charles Michel unveils his latest proposal for an 750-billion-euro pandemic recovery fund, as he seeks backing from more frugal member states at their first face-to-face summit since March next week. The novel coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the need to combat the threat to human health posed by the illegal trafficking of wild animals, according to a report by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). "Zoonotic diseases -- those caused by pathogens that spread from animals to humans -- represent up to 75 percent of all emerging infectious diseases", it reads. burs-acm/jmy/pvh
