  • As the death toll from the novel coronavirus surges past 1,000 in China, UN officials have warned of a "grave threat" for the rest of the world. Here are the latest global developments in the coronavirus crisis. The death toll from the coronavirus reaches 1,016 in China with more than 42,600 people infected. Another 108 deaths are reported -- the first triple-digit daily rise since the virus emerged in late December. China's President Xi Jinping, on a rare visit to a frontline hospital in Beijing, calls for more "decisive" measures to tackle the outbreak. Chinese authorities dismiss two senior health officials from hardest-hit Hubei province, the epicentre of the outbreak. The World Health Organization (WHO) hosts the first major conference on fighting the epidemic and warns that the coronavirus is a "very grave threat" for the planet. "With 99 percent of cases in China, this remains very much an emergency for that country, but one that holds a very grave threat for the rest of the world," says the WHO in its opening statement. The case of a British man who was infected and then passed on the virus to at least 11 other people -- without having been in China -- raises fears of a new phase of contagion abroad. A WHO team arrives in China on an international mission to examine the epidemic. The number of infections aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship off Japan's coast rises to 135, representing the biggest cluster outside China. The quarantine of roughly 3,600 passengers began a week ago and they are being asked to stay in their cabins and have been given thermometers to monitor their temperatures. More major tech companies say they will skip the Mobile World Congress later this month, though Chinese groups and other big names still plan to attend. Amazon and Sony say they will stay away from the world's biggest mobile tech fair in Barcelona, joining Swedish telecoms equipment maker Ericsson and South Korean giant LG. NTT DoCoMo, the biggest Japanese telecommunications operator and one of the biggest in Asia, says it will be absent too. nzg-eab/jmy/jxb
