| - The mayor of the Gabonese capital Libreville has been charged with corruption and embezzlement of funds, the public prosecutor's office and his lawyer told AFP on Wednesday. Leandre Nzue, 63, "was placed in custody on Tuesday evening after being charged on 11 counts," a senior source at the prosecutor's office said. They include criminal association, diversion of public funds, money laundering, extorsion and blackmail, the source said, without giving further details. His attorney, Jean-Paul Moumbembe, confirmed that his client had been placed in custody after being hospitalised on Monday, when he fell ill as he was being transferred to a court in Libreville following two days in police detention. Two of Nzue's aides were also charged on Tuesday, one of whom was transferred to Libreville central prison while the other was bailed, prosecutor Andre-Patrick Roponat said. Nzue, a member of the ruling Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), has been the capital's mayor since February 2019. He took over from Rose Christiane Ossouka Raponda after she was named defence minister, eventually being promoted prime minister in July this year. The oil-rich country is led by President Ali Bongo Ondimba, who in 2009 took over from his father Omar Bongo Ondimba, the country's ruler for 41 years. Last November, the authorities launched a crackdown on graft, notably targeting Brice Laccruche Alihanga, who as the president's chief of staff played the role of powerbroker after Bongo fell ill with a stroke in October 2018. gir/ri/wdb
