  • Almost three years after the deadly collapse of the Genoa bridge, Italian prosecutors on Thursday concluded their investigation with a series of damning findings expected to lead to criminal charges. Giancarlo Cancelleri, infrastructure minister in Prime Minister Mario Draghi's government, expressed shock at some of the conclusions, notably the "total lack of maintenance of the bridge -- no intervention for 51 years". According to media reports, nothing had been done to reinforce the supporting cables on pier nine from the bridge's inauguration in 1967 to the day the pier collapsed on August 14, 2018, killing 43 people. "We now hope for a swift and timely trial, because we have a commitment to the families of the victims," Cancelleri said. The tragedy shone a spotlight on Italy's decaying roads, bridges and railways -- and on the role of Autostrade per l'Italia, the motorway operator accused of a deadly failure to maintain the Genoa bridge. Investigators have reportedly identified 69 individual suspects, including the former head of Autostrade's parent company Atlantia, Giovanni Castelluci, and officials from Spea, its subsidiary in charge of maintenance. The prosecution file highlighted "incomplete" and "inadequate" inspections, according to reports, noting for example that the piers were inspected from below, using binoculars, rather than up close. gab-ar/har
