| - A team of five doctors and nine nurses arrived in Slovakia from Romania on Wednesday to help combat what is currently the world's highest Covid death rate. "The medical team from Romania arrived in Slovakia on Wednesday afternoon," interior ministry spokesman Peter Lazarov told AFP. The medics were dispatched following a request from Slovakia to the EU's Civil Protection Mechanism and they will support intensive care treatment of Covid-19 patients for three weeks. "Some of these Romanian healthcare professionals will help out at the Covid-19 ward of the National Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases in Bratislava," NICD spokeswoman Sona Valasikova said. "As there is a shortage of medical staff, all help is much appreciated and needed," she added. The EU country of 5.4 million, which was largely spared in the first wave of the pandemic last year, now has the world's highest rate of Covid deaths per 100,000 inhabitants over the last 14 days, according to an AFP tally. Throughout the post-communist country, there are 3,936 Covid patients in hospital. The total number of deaths stands at 6,775. juh/dt/kjl
