  • Eight pitchers for the Houston Astros have been forced into Covid-19 quarantines under Major League Baseball health and safety protocols, manager Dusty Baker said Friday. The Astros, who have played in the American League Championship Series the past four seasons, were facing two pre-season contests Friday with a severely depleted pitching staff. Luis Garcia, Ronel Blanco and Bryan Abreu were forced out of the team's training camp in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Thursday and were joined Friday by Pedro Baez, Cristian Javier, Enoli Paredes, Hector Velazquez and Francis Martes. It was uncertain who among them might be isolating after a positive Covid-19 test and which might quarantine only as a close contact with a confirmed positive person. "We can't comment on specifics other than we are following health and safety protocols," Astros general manager James Click said. MLB Covid-19 rules force close contacts to quarantine for seven days with a negative test required after at least five days to return. Those testing positive must isolate for at least 10 days and need a doctor's approval to return. Even with 39 pitchers in camp, the absences from the top roster mean at least a week of issues on the mound for the Astros with the start of the MLB campaign barely four weeks away. Parades and Martes each pitched one inning of relief work Thursday night in Houston's 14-0 victory over St. Louis. "We knew this was a possibility," Click said. "It's inevitable guys will get exposed and so we do have a plan in place -- even though they're not at the facility -- to keep them on track to get their work in and be ready for the season." Baez helped the Los Angeles Dodgers win the World Series last year before joining the Astros in January and Parades is also set to pitch for the Astros when the season opens. "We just have to adjust and re-adjust," Baker said. "Worrying about it or level of concern is not going to change anything. We've just got to find a way to work around it and find a solution. The Astros beat the Dodgers in the 2017 World Series, lost to eventual champion Boston in the 2018 AL finals, fell to Washington in the 2019 World Series and were beaten by Tampa Bay in last year's AL finals. js/rcw
