  • Britain will honour four French resistance fighters for their World War II efforts as it welcomes French President Emmanuel Macron on a visit Thursday to observe a key historical milestone. Macron will travel to London to mark 80 years since exiled wartime resistance leader Charles de Gaulle made his famous call from the UK capital to a defeated France not to give in to the Nazis. Ahead of the visit British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who will host the French leader in Downing Street, said the four elderly veterans will receive honorary MBEs "in recognition of their role defending the UK, France and other Allies" in WWII. Centenarian Edgard Tupet-Thome, 99-year-old Daniel Bouyjou-Cordier, Hubert Germain, 99, and Pierre Simonet, 98, are the four surviving "compagnons" of the Order of Liberation being recognised, according to Johnson's office. They played a significant role in facilitating the Allies' rapid advance through France following the invasion of Normandy in 1944, it added. The title of honorary MBE -- which Britain awards to foreign nationals -- makes the recipients members of the Order of Chivalry and allows them to use the initials "MBE" after their name. Johnson said the four men were heroes who "symbolise the enduring depth and strength of the friendship between our two countries". "Eighty years ago Charles de Gaulle... arrived in London knowing that the values of freedom, tolerance and democracy that Britain and France shared were under threat," he said. "He pledged that we would stand together to defend those values and protect our citizens from those bent on destroying us. "I am immensely proud that as a nation we are paying tribute to their courage and sacrifice in defending us and the whole world from fascism." Macron's symbolic visit is his first foreign trip since the coronavirus pandemic began, and Johnson's first in-person meeting with another world leader since he recovered after being hospitalised with the virus in April. Their meeting will also focus on the pandemic and thorny search for a post-Brexit deal between Britain and the EU. However, in his statement Johnson was eager to stress the importance of the two country's historical ties. "The struggles we face today are different to those we confronted together 80 years ago," he added. "But I have no doubt that -- working side by side -- the UK and France will continue to rise to every new challenge and seize every opportunity that lies ahead." jj/dmh/dl
