  • Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio condemned the Libyan coastguard Friday for firing shots at Italian fishermen after one was injured -- but also warned boats against crossing into "dangerous" Libyan waters. The coastguard on Thursday fired shots at three Italian fishing boats inside protected Libyan waters, injuring the captain of one, according to Italy's defence ministry. Salvatore Quinci, the mayor of the Sicilian fishing port of Mazara del Vallo, said the cabin of the boat was "riddled with bullets" and the captain suffered a wound to his arm and a head cut from a shard of glass. "It is unacceptable that the Libyan coastguard fires warning signs at body level," Di Maio told La7 television. "But those waters are dangerous and banned, we have been advising against going there not just for months but for 10 years. "On the other side of the sea is a country where there are still tensions and it is dangerous." Residents of Mazara del Vallo have for decades gone out near the Libyan coast to catch red prawns considered a delicacy and prized by restaurants. Dwindling stocks in fishing spots closer to Italy have pushed fishermen further afield, but a territorial dispute has led to a number of serious incidents in recent years. Last September, 18 fishermen from Sicily were captured off Benghazi by the forces of strongman Khalifa Haftar on the grounds they were fishing in Libyan waters, before being freed in December. Tensions over fishing rights between Sicily and its North African neighbour were fanned in 2005, when Libya's then leader Moamer Kadhafi proclaimed the country's protected fishing zone extended 74 nautical miles out from the coast, in defiance of international standards. The civil war in Libya has further exacerbated tensions with Italy, which advises its fishermen to avoid the contested zone. glr-ar/dl
