  • Hundreds of people stranded on Russia's border with Azerbaijan due to coronavirus travel restrictions blamed authorities on Monday for failing to intervene and decried conditions in a make-shift camp. Several hundred people trying to return to Azerbaijan have been languishing in a tent camp established two months ago by officials in Russia's North Caucasus region of Dagestan. An estimated 700 people have gathered near the village of Kullar, unable to cross into Azerbaijan since Russia sealed its borders in late March to slow the spread of the pandemic. Those staying in the camp that was set up to accommodate just 300 complain of unsanitary conditions and overcrowding. "The heat in tents is terrible. We can't bathe and the place is full of snakes," Asim Tagiyev told AFP. "Some of us went on a hunger strike," said Malik Khudoverdi, who has slept outdoors for more than a month. Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev promised action during a May 19 phone conversation. The leaders told their relevant ministries to "resolve the situation in coordination with local authorities", according to a Kremlin statement. "Azerbaijan is working on a solution to the problem," foreign ministry spokeswoman Leyla Abdullayeva told AFP. "We are gradually returning our people to their homeland and the process will continue," she said. Yet camp residents accused Azerbaijan authorities of "indifference" and failing to act quickly enough. "One hundred and thirty people are allowed to return to Azerbaijan each week while between 200 and 300 more arrive," said Khudoverdi. Tagiev said Azerbaijani officials who recently visited the camp didn't speak to any of the residents. "They looked at us from a distance and didn't even talk to us." vid-eg-im/jbr/bp
