  • Features Editors: Paris: Kate Millar +33 1 4041 4636 Hong Kong: Liz Thomas +852 2829 6211 In December 2010, an impoverished Tunisian street vendor set himself alight, goaded by years of police harassment. His shocking act of desperation triggered a series of revolts around the Arab world, as young people sought to shake off the shackles of despotic, corrupt and out-of-touch regimes. To mark the 10th anniversary of the protests, AFP bureaus around the Middle East and North Africa region and beyond have produced a series of in-depth stories, backed by a wealth of archive photos and video, to examine the root causes of what became known as the Arab Spring and examine its legacy. What did it achieve? Where are we now? And what may come next? From unfulfilled hopes and dreams, and the chaos left behind in many countries, to the iron-fisted dictators who fell and the international community which failed to see the protests coming, AFP has interviewed many of those who bore witness to the haunting events, which were to change the region's political landscape forever. The stories will be moved over three weeks, on Mondays, starting from today, accompanied by fresh photos, graphics and video from some of the Arab Spring's most iconic datelines, including its birthplace in Sidi Bouzid in Tunisia. We begin with the following items: + From hope to agony, what's left of the Arab Spring? + Syria's Assad: Lone survivor of Arab Spring + A decade on, the broken dreams of the Arab Spring + Kadhafi's cousin sees Arab Spring as Western plot + The Arab Spring: A timeline Arab-revolution-anniversary,SPECIAL REPORT BEIRUT Ten years ago, a wildfire of revolts in the Arab world touched off an unlikely series of events that swelled, then dashed many hopes, and irrevocably changed the region. 2,500 words by Jean Marc Mojon.
