Nikola Zurovac was one of dozens of Warsaw ambassadors who called for gay people to be better protected in Poland, where the government has labelled the promotion of gay rights as "LGBT ideology" and likened it to communism. Serbian Foreign Minister Nikola Selakovic revealed that the Poles had cancelled his scheduled visit to Warsaw over the issue, and said the envoy's future would be discussed in the coming days. In an interview posted on the ministry's website late on Wednesday, he said the content of the letter was not the problem but rather that the ambassador failed to report his actions to Serbia. "It is considered that the state is behind what the ambassador did. He did not consult with anyone," he said. Some opposition parties said Serbia, a candidate for EU membership, was "showing its homophobic face" by recalling the ambassador. "Putting his visit to Poland... before the core values of the Europan Union shows that Serbia's EU path is just a mantra the ruling party waves whenever it suits them," Movement of Free Citizens (PSG) said in a statement. Although Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic is openly gay, many in the country's LGBT community complain that they live in fear. Poland's governing Law and Justice (PiS) party has for years opposed promotion of gay rights.
