The old mark for the most strikeouts starting a season before issuing a walk belonged to Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Kenley Jansen, who struck out 51 batters in 2017 before walking one. Burnes had already set the mark for starting pitchers, which had belonged to Adam Wainwright at 35 before the Brewers batter baffler beat it on April 20 at San Diego. Burnes passed Jansen when he struck out Harrison Bader of the Cardinals in the second inning Thursday for his 52nd strikeout of the season. When Burnes reached his 57th strikeout of the season without a walk, by striking out Cardinals catcher Andrew Knizner to begin the fifth inning, he broke the old MLB record for the most strikeouts without a walk in any stretch of a season in MLB history. The previous mark of 56 was set by Curt Schilling in 2002 and matched this season by Gerrit Cole of the New York Yankees, whose streak remains active. Cole struck out 12 in pitching eight scoreless innings for the Yankees in a 1-0 victory Wednesday and hasn't walked a batter since April 12. js/rcw
