| - The cycling world championships scheduled for Aigle-Martigny in Switzerland on September 20-27, might be called off because of local health rules, organisers warned on Friday. The top professional cyclists, riding in national colours, compete in the elite races but the competition is largely amateur with youth, under-23 and para-cycling events for men and women from as many as 80 nations around the world. "Looking at the epidemic right now, we can't exclude the event being banned," organisers said on Friday. Swiss federal authorities are due to examine their rules on August 12, and may ban sports gatherings involving more than 1,000 people. "We are taking into account all the nationalities needing to quarantine on arrival in Switzerland, which is getting longer," the organisers said. ebe/dmc/pb
