  • Dutch authorities on Thursday probed a rowdy dance party held outside a bar in the centre of The Hague as a partial coronavirus lockdown was about to take effect. Footage of revellers packed close together without face masks late Wednesday sparked outrage in the Netherlands, which has one of Europe's highest infection rates. Police eventually cleared out the party, which took place in Plein Square opposite parliament while the body was in session. "This is utterly irresponsible," The Hague Mayor Jan van Zanen said in a statement. "Of course people want to party again, but this kind of selfish behaviour only prolongs the duration of the measures" which are due to last at least four weeks, he added. The city is working with Dutch police "to see what steps could be taken against the venue and its visitors", the mayor's spokesman told AFP. The closures of all bars, cafes and restaurants as of 10 pm Wednesday were part of a partial lockdown announced by Prime Minister Mark Rutte on Tuesday as daily coronavirus cases passed the 7,000 mark in the Netherlands. Crowds gathered in nightlife areas in several cities to have a final drink on Wednesday night before the new rules came into force. The party in Plein Square involved dozens of revellers singing and dancing without following social distancing rules, AFP reporters at the scene saw. Cheers erupted as a DJ shouted "Ain't no party like an alcoholic party", before police entered the marquee and asked patrons to leave shortly before 10 pm. Police on horseback and in vans also patrolled the area. The bar owner who rented the tent where the party was held, John Prins, told the NOS public broadcaster that he was "ashamed about what happened". But Prins added that he felt the story was "very much taken out of context". Lawmakers who were debating the Covid-19 rules in parliament on the other side of the square expressed anger at the party. "This really is not possible. Stick to the rules and do it for someone else!" Defence Minister Ank Bijleveld tweeted. Dutch virologist Marion Koopmans, who heads the government's virus task force, told NOS the party "was a middle finger to those who are sticking to the rules." jhe/dk/gd
