"Belarus has taken another step backwards today by suspending its participation in the Eastern Partnership," Michel wrote on Twitter. "This will escalate tensions further and have a clear negative impact on the people of Belarus by depriving them of opportunities provided by our cooperation." Minsk announced the move after the EU last week imposed sanctions on key sectors of the Belarusian economy. Brussels was punishing Belarusian authorities for forcing a Ryanair flight to land in May to arrest a dissident journalist and his girlfriend. Belarus also said its representative to the EU had been recalled to Minsk for consultations. And it "invited" the head of the EU Delegation to Belarus to return to Brussels and "convey to his leadership the position of the Belarusian side". Last week's sanctions were the most wide-ranging imposed by the EU since it began targeting the regime of veteran ruler Alexander Lukashenko. The bloc's sanctions were a response to Lukashenko's crackdown on protests sparked by his proclaimed victory in an August election deemed fraudulent by the West. Lukashenko, who has led Belarus since 1994, has so far shrugged off Western pressure with the support of his key ally Russia. The EU launched its Eastern Partnership initiative in 2009, offering six former Soviet states -- Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia -- improved economic and political ties in return for reforms. del/rmb/tgb
