  • Bolivia told the United States and Brazil Thursday to "not interfere" in its internal affairs following criticism of the arrest and detention of former interim president Jeanine Anez. The ex-leader was arrested last week on charges of terrorism, sedition and conspiracy over what her predecessor and political rival Evo Morales claims was a coup attempt against him. Bolivia's foreign ministry said in a statement it had held separate meetings in La Paz with diplomats of the United States and Brazil and reminded them of international accords directing countries to "not interfere" in other nations' affairs. The US State Department had expressed "concern" over Anez' arrest, while Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro called for Bolivia to respect the rule of law. The Organization of American States, United Nations and European Union have also called for due process to be followed. Conservative politician Anez and two of her former ministers were arrested last weekend as part of a probe into an alleged conspiracy to overthrow leftist Morales. Anez came to power in November 2019 after Morales and several senior allies in his Movement for Socialism (MAS) party resigned following weeks of protest over his controversial reelection to an unconstitutional fourth term. As Morales fled into exile, Anez was the most senior parliamentarian left and was sworn in by congress as the interim president despite the lack of a quorum, with many MAS legislators boycotting the session. Morales and his MAS allies then claimed they had been the victims of a coup. The MAS was reelected to power last year, and now controls the presidency and congress. On Monday, tens of thousands of Bolivians answered an opposition call for protests against the arrests they claim are the result of political score-settling. apg/jac/mlr/bfm
