  • Fact Check: Old video of anti-CAA protest in Kerala passed off as rally against Tripura violence A video of a rally is going viral on social media with the claim that it shows how a group in Kerala protested against the recent communal violence in Tripura. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The video was shot in January last year during a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Kerala’s Mannarkkad. Communal tensions flared up in the northeastern state of Tripura recently after some Hindu groups took out a rally against attacks on minorities in Bangladesh. It has been alleged that members of Vishva Hindu Parishad vandalised a mosque and some Muslim properties in Tripura's Panisagar. Now, a video of a huge rally has gone viral on social media with the claim that this is how people in Kerala protested against the violence in Tripura. #TripuraViolence #UnityAndPeaceForTripura HattsOff to the people of Kerla ! #___ pic.twitter.com/LRdzipAGt2— Mohammad Kareem (@kareemmimbar78) November 4, 2021 Several Facebook and Twitter users have shared the video with the same claim. The archived version of the viral tweet is saved here. India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) has found the claim along with the video to be misleading. The video was shot in January last year during a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Kerala's Mannarkkad. AFWA investigation One can hear announcements in Malayalam in the video, but they were related to CAA. Taking this as a clue, we searched the video on Internet using keywords and found that it was uploaded on Instagram on January 3, 2020. Here, the caption says, "#rejectnrc #rejectcaa #Mannarkkad". The Instagram video is the longer version of the viral clipping and of higher resolution. At 1.07 minutes, it shows a banner in the rally with "Constitutional PROTECTION RALLY" written on it. The same banner can also be seen at the beginning of another video uploaded by YouTube channel "mannarkkad live" on January 3, 2020. The video description says it is a protest rally against the citizenship bill in Mannarkkad. The words "Mannarkkad" in Malayalam, "CAA" and "NRC", and date "03 January, 2020" can be clearly seen in the banner. After 5.20 minutes, the YouTube video shows visuals similar to those seen in the viral clipping and Instagram video. All the above proof ascertain that the viral video was shot during an anti-CAA rally held on January 3, 2020, in Kerala's Mannarkkad. That was the time protests broke out against the Act across the country. The demonstrations were especially well-attended in Kerala. Therefore, it can be concluded that a nearly two-year-old video is being passed off as demonstrations against the recent violence in Tripura.
