New Delhi (Vishvas News). Ahead of the assembly elections in Delhi, a video of Bollywood actor Pankaj Tripathi is going viral, in which he can allegedly be seen campaigning against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
In its investigation, Vishvas News found this claim to be fake. The video has been altered using AI tools. The original video is of National Payment Corporation of India’s (NPCI’s) campaign to make people aware of fraud in digital payments. The synthetic audio and visuals with Pankaj Tripathi’s voice have been manipulated.
What is the viral post?
This video has been posted (archive link) from the x handle of Aam Aadmi Party Uttar Pradesh.
X user ‘Sakshi Gupta AAP’ also shared this video (archive link) with similar claims.
Facebook user Hamender Ghagat has also shared this video (archive link).
Investigation
To verify the authenticity of the viral claim, we captured a screenshot of the video and searched it using Google Lens. Our investigation led us to a report published on the AFAQS website on September 25, 2024. The report featured Pankaj Tripathi advising people not to fall prey to fake lottery links. According to the report, UPI has launched a new campaign ‘Main Fool Nahi Hoon’ against online fraud, starring Pankaj Tripathi. In the original video, he is seen advising people to avoid scams, while the viral video has been altered to display the BJP election symbol.
This video is also available on UPI Chalaega’s YouTube channel, uploaded on September 23, 2024. In this, Pankaj Tripathi advises viewers not to click on fake lottery links.
The same video has been posted from UPI’s X handle as well with the caption, “A peanut vendor receives a message claiming that he has won a lottery and he needs to click on the link to receive his prize money. Will he fall for the temptation, or find a smart solution? Watch the full video to know what happens.”
According to a press release issued by the NPCI on November 6, 2024, NPCI launched the UPI security awareness campaign ‘Main Fool Nahi Hoon’ to raise awareness about safe use of digital payment services and prevent fraud. Pankaj Tripathi, the brand ambassador of the campaign, will star in a series of six ad films.
This confirmed that the viral video was altered. For further verification, we checked its audio using the AI detection tool True Media, which indicated the potential AI usage in the video.
We collaborated with our partner DAU (an initiative of MCA) to investigate the viral video. DAU’s expert team utilised several tools to analyse the video.
The Hiya tool also revealed the possibility of AI manipulation of the audio.
However, Hive AI’s analysis does not indicate any possibility of tampering in the video. It is important to note that the visuals in the viral video were slightly altered, with the BJP election symbol being added.
We reached out to senior entertainment journalist Parag Chhapekar in Mumbai for insights. He said, “I spoke to Pankaj Tripathi about this. He has called it a deepfake.”
Conclusion: The video claiming Pankaj Tripathi is campaigning for the BJP ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections is fake. The original video is part of the ongoing ‘Main Fool Nahi Hoon’ campaign aimed at raising awareness about frauds in digital payments. That video has been tampered and circulated with false claims.
